Historical accounts of the origins of Baccarat are disputed: some sources claim it was invented in the 1800s, while others trace it back to the 15th century when French soldiers brought it from Italy.
Baccarat grew popular among French nobles in the 1800s, remaining in private rooms until France legalized casino gambling in 1907. Its high-class image was later cemented by James Bond in "Casino Royale."
Baccarat was first referenced publicly in the UK in 1866 by the Daily Telegraph, spreading rapidly to England and the U.S.
Three popular variants formed: baccarat banque, chemin de fer, and punto banco—the modern version we know today.
In Baccarat, players bet on Player, Banker, or Tie. Cards 2–9 have face value; 10, J, Q, K are worth 0; and Aces are worth 1. Hands are valued by the rightmost digit of their card total.
