The History of Baccarat
A timeless game of chance loved by players worldwide
Historical accounts of Baccarat’s origins are debated: some trace it back to 19th-century France, while others believe it came from Italy in the 15th century, brought over by French soldiers. The game gained popularity among French nobles in the 1800s and remained a private pastime until France legalized casino gambling in 1907. Its elegant reputation was later cemented by James Bond’s iconic appearance in Casino Royale.
Baccarat was first publicly mentioned in the UK in 1866 by the Daily Telegraph and quickly spread to England and the U.S. Over time, three popular variants emerged: Baccarat Banque, Chemin de Fer, and Punto Banco—the modern version we know today.
